Brown noise

A deep, steady rumble with no ads and no loop you can hear. Set a sleep timer and it fades out on its own, or switch to a black screen and leave it running.

Minutes. Off plays until you stop it.

How to use it for sleep

  1. 1

    Keep it quiet

Turn it up only until it covers the sounds that bother you, and keep the phone across the room rather than on your pillow.

  2. 2

    Set a timer

If you only need help falling asleep, pick 30 or 45 minutes. On most devices the sound fades out over the last 30 seconds instead of cutting off.

  3. 3

    Go dark

Tap Black screen so the page gives off no light and stays open. Tap anywhere to bring the controls back.

Brown, pink or white noise?

They're all random noise. What changes is how the energy is spread between low and high pitches.

ColourSounds likeEnergyTry it if
Brown noiseA deep rumble, like a distant waterfall or a strong windMost of it in the low end, falling 6 dB per octaveWhite noise sounds harsh to you, or you want something to fade into the background
Pink noiseA softer hiss, like steady rainFalls 3 dB per octave, so each octave carries equal energyYou want a middle ground that still covers voices
White noiseA bright, even hiss, like TV static or a fanSpread evenly across every frequencyYou mainly need to cover voices or a TV through the wall

Questions

Is this brown noise player free?+

Yes. There are no ads, no account and nothing to install. NSDR.co is free to use, and there will always be a free plan.

Does brown noise help you sleep?+

There are very few controlled studies of brown noise itself. Most sleep research uses white or pink noise, and the results are mixed. Many people find a steady sound helps them fall asleep because it covers sudden noises that would otherwise wake them. Our brown noise for sleep guide goes through what the evidence does and doesn't show.

How loud should brown noise be for sleep?+

Only as loud as it needs to be to cover the sounds that bother you. Keep it quieter than normal conversation and put the phone or speaker across the room rather than next to your head. If you only need help falling asleep, set the sleep timer so it doesn't play all night.

Will it keep playing when my screen locks?+

It plays through your browser like any other audio, so on most phones it keeps going with the screen locked and shows play and pause on the lock screen. If your phone stops it, turn on the black screen instead: it keeps the screen on but dark, so the page stays open.

Is there a gap or a loop I can hear?+

The noise is generated in your browser, and the end of each 30-second stretch blends into the start, so there's no noticeable gap. The noise isn't streamed, so it doesn't buffer. Soundscapes like rain are streamed recordings.

What does the black screen do?+

It covers the page in pure black and keeps the screen from locking, so the sound keeps playing while your screen gives off as little light as possible. Tap anywhere to bring back play, pause and exit. On a laptop, press B to toggle it and Esc to leave.
