Rest for 10 minutes

Noise plays in the background while you do something else. NSDR (non-sleep deep rest) is guided rest. You lie still with your eyes closed, stay awake, and follow a voice that moves your attention through your body and slows your breathing.

What does the fan sound like?

This isn't a recording of a fan. The player makes the sound in your browser, modelled on a three-blade fan. It's a steady, broadband whoosh of air with a soft hum underneath at the rate the blades pass. Because it's generated, there's no gap you can hear when it loops and nothing to buffer.

Is fan noise good for sleep?

  • No study has tested the sound of a fan on sleep. A PubMed search on 19 Oct 2026 found no papers on fan noise and sleep. PubMed, 19 Oct 2026
  • The evidence we have is for continuous noise in general. A 2021 review of 38 studies rated the evidence that continuous noise improves sleep "very low". Riedy 2021
  • A real fan also moves air, which can make a warm room feel cooler. The sound on this page does none of that. Sleep temperature guide

How loud and how long

Long or repeated exposure at 85 dBA or more can cause hearing loss, so turn it up only until it covers the sounds that bother you. Put your phone across the room, not by your head.

In a 2026 sleep-lab study, a night of pink noise alone at 50 dB cut REM sleep by about 19 minutes. Fan noise wasn't tested, but it is broadband noise too, so 50 dB is a ceiling, not a target. Set the timer so it fades out instead of playing all night. Basner 2026

Questions

Why does a fan help me sleep?

The likely reason is that it's steady. In a small sleep-lab study, what woke people was the jump from background to peak, not how loud the peak was. Adding white noise shrank that jump. A fan's whoosh is steady in the same way, though nobody has tested a fan itself.

Fan noise or white noise?

Fan noise is duller. Most of its energy sits in the low and middle pitches, with a soft hum. White noise is an even hiss right up to the highest pitches. Neither has good evidence for sleep, so pick the one you stop noticing.

Is it OK to play fan noise all night?

Nobody has tested a whole night of fan noise. The closest result is the 2026 study where a night of pink noise at 50 dB cut REM sleep. If you need it all night to cover traffic or a snoring partner, keep it under 50 dB and across the room. If you only need help falling asleep, set the timer.
