What is 4-7-8 breathing?
4-7-8 breathing was popularised by Dr Andrew Weil as a wind-down routine. The exhale is twice as long as the inhale, and that long, slow out-breath is the part that does most of the calming. Many people use it in bed to slow a busy mind.
How to do it
- 1Rest the tip of your tongue behind your top front teeth.
- 2Breathe out fully through your mouth.
- 3Breathe in quietly through your nose for 4.
- 4Hold for 7.
- 5Breathe out through your mouth with a soft whoosh for 8. That is one cycle.
Why it works
Long exhales are associated with slower heart rate and a calmer state. Direct research on the exact 4-7-8 count is limited, so treat it as a well-structured slow-breathing practice rather than a proven sleep cure.
Tips
- Start with four cycles. Light-headedness at first is common, so sit or lie down.
- The ratio matters more than the speed. Count faster if the holds feel too long.
- Pair it with an NSDR session if you wake in the night.
