What is coherent breathing?

Coherent breathing, also called resonance breathing, means breathing smoothly at around six breaths per minute with no holds. It is the pattern used in heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback, and it is easy to keep up for ten minutes or more.

How to do it

  1. 1Breathe in gently through your nose for about 5.5 seconds.
  2. 2Breathe out through your nose for about 5.5 seconds.
  3. 3Keep the transition smooth. No pauses at the top or bottom.
  4. 4Follow the wave for 5 to 20 minutes.

Why it works

Breathing near six breaths a minute tends to line up heart rate rhythms with the breath and increases heart rate variability. This is the basis of HRV biofeedback, which has been studied for stress, anxiety and blood pressure.

Tips

  • Your personal resonance rate is usually between 4.5 and 7 breaths a minute. Six is a good default.
  • Breathe low into the belly rather than lifting your chest.
  • This is the best pattern for a longer daily session.
