Iodine

What Huberman said

Huberman says the thyroid needs iodine to make thyroid hormone, that you don't need a whole lot, and that it can be supplemented through kelp, seaweed and kelp tablets. He says some people benefit from supplementing iodine.

Cautions he mentions

  • If you are hyperthyroidal (make too much thyroid), that can be a problem; anytime you're manipulating levels of thyroid, you absolutely want to talk to your doctor.[1]

Safety notes from independent sources

  • EFSA's summary table gives an adult upper limit for iodine of 600 micrograms a day from all sources. EFSA: Tolerable upper intake levels (2025)
  • The iodine in seaweed and kelp varies widely. If you take antithyroid medicine, speak to your doctor before supplementing, and get medical advice first if you have thyroid disease. NIH ODS: Iodine
