Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium)

Also called salt, LMNT

What Huberman said

Huberman says he drinks water, electrolytes and caffeine before training, and that you need enough salt, potassium and magnesium to perform well. In an LMNT sponsor read he says he drinks a packet dissolved in water on waking and during exercise.

Doses, as he worded them

  • “one packet of LMNT in about 16 to 32 ounces of water”[3]

his own use on waking (sponsor read)

Quoted, not prescribed. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first if you take medication, are pregnant or have a health condition.

Cautions he mentions

  • You need to know your blood pressure; people with pre-hypertension or hypertension should be especially cautious about doing anything that increases blood pressure.[3]
  • Talk to your doctor about doing anything that could adjust your health in any direction.[3]

Safety notes from independent sources

  • One LMNT packet contains 1,000 mg of sodium. LMNT: product page
  • The WHO recommends adults have less than 2,000 mg of sodium a day in total, so two packets reach that limit before any food. WHO: Salt reduction
  • If you have kidney disease, or take ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers or potassium-sparing diuretics, check with a doctor before using electrolyte products that contain potassium, because blood potassium can build up. NIH ODS: Potassium
